Mario Bro. Star
This week I took a break from cakes to make cookies. My friend asked me to make the star from the Mario Bro.'s game for her son Jarred's Mario Brothers themed party. Honestly I don't enjoy making cookies as much as I enjoy making cakes, but I made an exception for my friend's special request.
These cookies were 3 inch sugar cookies with lemon flavored royal icing. I made the eyes by simply cutting out oval pieces of black fondant and placing them onto the stars. I must say I did enjoyed making these batch of cookies, but I enjoyed sampling them even more.
Optimus Prime
This was definitely a Transformer filled weekend. I made this cake for my friend's son Evan's 6th Birthday who was also having a Transformer themed party. Evan is Jayden's cousin from my previous Transformer post and they celebrated their birthdays a day apart. Evan's mom had a wonderful assortment of sweet treats and party favors for the kids and wanted a cake to go with her already amazing spread.
This cake was made using two 8" square cakes. I cut and layered the cakes to size using 3 layers for the cab of the truck and 2 layers for the back. Everything was completely edible except for the two exhaust pipes that had toothpicks in side them to hold their shape and the Transformer Logo on the side of the truck that was actually a ring.
Transformers Party Part II
Part II of Jayden's 7th Birthday celebration was at his house with family and friends. That morning I took a topsy turvy class and decided to gear the cake towards Jayden's party at night. Originally this class was designed for a very girly cake with stripes, polka dots, and a flower bouquet topper. I asked the instructor if it was okay if I did my own design and explained to her that I was going to give it to Jayden for his party. It's always nice to know that your cake is going to be used during a special occasion instead of sitting at your house going to waste.
From the angle of these pictures you cannot really tell the cake is topsy turvy. I made a few errors for my first time attempting this cake. My first mistake was I did not make my layers thick enough to see a dramatic effect. I should have made my layers thicker so there was more cake to shave off. Secondly, I made my cake a little to soft so I had to trouble shoot and place the cake in the freezer for about 30mins. after I crumb coated it. A more dense cake would work much better for this style of cake since you have to tort the cake at an angle. If it's too soft the cake will just crumble.
I decorated the bottom layer of the cake using 1 inch diamonds I gradually decreased the diamonds to a single line on the "turvy" side of the cake. The second layer had hand cut flames to follow the theme of Optimus Prime that was standing on the top of the cake.
Keep an eye out for my next topsy turvy cake in a couple of weeks. Hopefully I learned from my mistakes.
Transformers Party Part I
I made this cake and cupcakes for my friend's son. Jayden was celebrating his 7th Birthday Transformer style. Part I of his birthday celebration was at a Tai Kwon Do studio where him and a few friends showed off their martial arts moves. His mom asked me to make a small cake and cupcakes to help celebrate his special day.
This 6 inch cake was made so that Jayden had a cake to blow out his candles on. I printed out a copy of the Transformer's Logo and used it as a template for the fondant cutout in front of the cake. Jayden's mom provided me with the Optimus Prime figurine that was placed on top the cake. The base of the cake had hand cut flames to tie in the whole Optimus Prime theme.

Shop 'til you drop!
My Zumba instructor asked me to make this cake for her daughter, friend, and friend's daughter who were all having a joint birthday party. The one thing all three ladies had in common was they all loved to shop.
This was a 14" round cake covered in fondant. The base was trimmed with black and white polk-a-dot ribbon attached with royal icing. All the figures on top of the cake where molded out of fondant including the sofa and lady on top. The bags around the sofa where various shopping bags accumulated from a long day of shopping.
The Wonder Twins!
| Chuggington, Chugga Chugga, Chugga Chugga, Chuggington! |
| Princess Aurora for Princess Cassidy! |
These cakes where made for my friends' twin boy and girl. They celebrated their 3rd birthdays at Goofy's Kitchen at Disneyland Hotel. So it was fitting that both twins had their favorite Disney characters as a theme for their Birthday cakes.
Boy twin Dylan's cartoon of choice is Disney's Chuggington. His mom told me his 3 favorite trains on the show so I molded each one out of fondant and placed them on top of the train tracks on the cake. The sign with his name was made out of gum paste and placed on the cake with skewers. The whole time I was making this cake I could not get the theme song out of my head I was singing it so much that it spread to my 3 year old daughter who would not stop singing it as well.
Girl twin Cassidy's favorite Disney princess is Princess Aurora and also has an obsession with the color pink. I used a brick impression mold for the sides of the cake to make it have somewhat of a castle effect and draped white fondant all around the cake. The princess was a Wondermold topper that I draped with pink fondant adding curled pieces of fondant all around the skirt.
Fun in the Sun!
I made this cake to donate to my friend's daughter's preschool. They were having a bake sale to raise money for tornado victims in the south.
My friend asked if I could do a beach them cake for them so I came up with this cake.
On the side of the cake I free handed waves made out of fondant and placed starfish sprinkled with graham cracker crumbs. I also molded some small flowers to put them around the side of the cake.
The top of the cake was topped with graham cracker crumbs to give it a sand affect with a towel and flip flops to represent the beach.
I'm happy to say that this was the only cake at the bake sale that they kept whole instead of selling by the slice and decided to do an open auction instead. The cake ended up selling for $25.00 which went to a good cause.
